Being the largest mangrove area in the country – about 240 hectares – the Malanza River is protected by São Tomé’s Obô Natural Park. It is a tropical ecosystem of transition between land and sea, dominated by vegetation composed of the following typical tree species.
Avicennia (Black mangrove) is highly resistant to salt water; this species absorbs the salt and releases it through its leaves, visible in the form of crystals. The roots coming out of the water allow the plant to breathe and stabilize.
