Jalé Beach Ecolodge and Sea Turtles Protection

Sea turtles have been coming to the beaches of Sao Tome and Principe for milions of years and the islands have the most diverse range of sea turtles in central africa. On the south edge of the Sao Tome Island you will find Jalé beach, where giant sea turtles climb up in the morning hours to lay their eggs in the sand. It is possible to stay the night on the beach in small huts without electricity.

Did you hear about Jalé Ecolodge? Jale is a small and very rustic ecolodge on the southern tip of Sao Tome island. The lodge has a project to encourage the survival chances of the turtles who nest on these remote beaches, and if visiting at the right time of year it may be possible to see the staff releasing the young hatchlings into the sea early in the morning.

Praia Jalé is located on the southern edge of the island. This is a beach where giant sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand every morning. Here you have the opportunity to spend the night on the guarded beach, staying in small huts that have no electricity. The beach guards can be asked to wake you up in the morning so you can watch the extraordinary spectacle from close up.
